Nano-Scale Modeling of C-S-H

ERDC is conducting experiments and simulations for characterizing Calcium-Silicate-Hydrate (C-S-H) behavior. The discrete element capabilities of MARS are being used to create nano-scale models of C-S-H specimens subjected to nano-indentation testing. The simulation results from these models are providing new knowledge in the nanomechanical behavior of C-S-H and are helping in formulating constitutive laws for higher scale simulations.
Shown above is an AFM image of an indent left by a Berkovich tip. Below are the results of a nano-scale MARS simulation of a similar event in C-S-H.
